Mayor’s Youth Council helps the homeless
By JOE POTTER
The Mayor’s Youth Council raised approximately $10,000 by the BBQ Chicken Drive-By meals they served on Nov. 20 at Meals on Wheels East Pasco Inc.
The Youth Council’s original goal was to raise $4,000 to donate to the Community Hope and Intervention Project of Zephyrhills (CHIPZ).
The primary purpose of CHIPZ is to assist homeless people in Zephyrhills and other nearby areas.
A hundred percent of the proceeds from the Youth Council’s fundraiser will be given to CHIPZ and there won’t be any restrictions on how CHIPZ uses the money,Mayor Melonie Bahr Monson said.
This will be a real advantage to CHIPZ because grants it receives have to be used for specific purposes, Mayor Monson said.
CHIPZ has been helping homeless people for about two years.
The members of the Mayor’s Youth Council participate in one major project each year.
Mayor Monson said Youth Council members had been working really hard both up to and on the date that the BBQ Chicken Drive-By meals fundraiser was held.
Hundreds of people received their food at 38120 15th Ave. in Zephyrhills where employees of Bahr Propane Gas & AC Inc., were preparing it.
The food had also been provided by Bahr Propane Gas & AC Inc., which is owned by Mayor Monson’s brother.
Sponsors for this fundraising event included B&H Construction, Bennett Septic, Rick’s Café, Kelley’s Septic, Jodi Wilkeson, Councilwoman, Ryman Construction/Roofing, San Antonio Citizens Federal Credit Union, Tires Plus Zephyrhills, Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco County and Alex Hulbert.
Mayor Monson first announced this fundraising event during the Oct. 13 meeting of the Zephyrhills City Council.
Several members of the Mayor’s Youth Council attended that meeting and made some interesting remarks.
Some of them said they had joined the Mayor’s Youth Council because they wanted to help Zephyrhills to be a better community in which to live. Youth Council members at the Oct. 13 meeting were students at either Zephyrhills High School or Academy of Spectrum Diversity while some other members were being home schooled.
Zephyrhills Police Chief Derek Brewer who is chairman of CHIPZ thanked the Mayor’s Youth Council on Oct. 13 for the support they were going to be giving to CHIPZ.
