BAKERS ACRES Veterans Appreciation Lunch

BAKERS ACRES Veterans Appreciation Lunch

By Susan Slater

Bakers Acres hosted a luncheon produced by Melissa Miller and volunteers. At the start of the event, everyone rose for all resident veterans to enter the clubhouse. Everyone remained standing and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. DeeDee Yanek followed with the National Anthem in a graciously beautiful voice.

Tony Green, Emcee, began with opening remarks: “This is no fanfare,” said Green. “We have gratitude and respect for our veterans.” He went on to recognize their service and respect for it.

An extraordinary segment of the event took place with a photo on the big screen of a young man or woman in their military uniform. As their name was called, the veteran stood until all were standing. Then Bette Scgorski sang America the Beautiful heartfully.

A very honorable part of the ceremony was the 13 Folds of the Flag. Bruce Kraai recited the meaning of each fold as two gentlemen folded the flag with each meaning. Following the fold, DeeDee Yanok sang God Bless America.

A special reading by Patricia Johnson spoke of the ideals of freedom and devotion to our country. Another highlight of the event was the MIA Table Ceremony. Linda Monroe and Holly Green participated with a reading and each piece placed on the table as each meaning was read. White for purity, Red Rose for blood shed. Salt for the fallen tears from the families. A candle for the soldier that is alone facing our enemies. A very touching ceremony.

All joined in to sing Proud to be an American by Lee Greenwood. In closing, a blessing was read and Tony gave his closing remarks appreciating the veterans, the committee’s efforts, and the value and appreciation they had for them all.

Freedom isn’t free. It is carried on the shoulders of the Brave. God Bless the veterans and this community. ♥
