BETMAR ACRES - Blessed With Joy

BETMAR ACRES - Blessed With Joy

By Susan Slater

Michelle McKinnon, Betmar’s Activities Councilor, retires. Michelle’s story is one of surprises and making a difference wherever she goes. From being unexpectedly crowned homecoming queen to embarking on a teaching career in Arizona and Michigan, she has always found ways to inspire those around her.

In Michigan, she taught Science and Social Studies for five years, and it was there her unique sense of humor sparked a connection with her future husband. Their quirky “do I have food in my teeth?” exchange began a relationship that led to a memorable proposal—her husband dressed as the Easter Bunny, surrounded by 90 kids, asking her to marry him at school.

Michelle’s journey didn’t stop with teaching. She stayed active, running a marathon and triathlon, participating in cross country and track alongside her students, and earning a black belt in Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art. Her passion for helping kids extended beyond the classroom with her involvement in the Optimist Club of Davison, where she helped raise significant funds and provide scholarships through creative events like camel races.

Her teaching philosophy was grounded in movement, music, and interactive labs, making science come alive for her students. She even used love language surveys to tailor positive reinforcement, ensuring every child felt valued. Michelle’s dedication to fostering lasting comprehension and joy in learning left a lasting mark.

After moving to Muirwood Apartments, Michelle shifted gears and became an activities director, orchestrating bingo nights, wine and cheese gatherings, aerobics classes, and day trips for residents, further fueling her creative spirit. The next chapter brought Michelle to Florida, where family ties led her to Betmar. As snowbirds, she and her husband Mac juggled life between Michigan and Florida until Mac’s job allowed him to work in Florida, finally settling them in Betmar.

Retirement opened new opportunities—Michelle stepped in as Activities Councilor when the previous leader departed, eventually running for office and enjoying the vibrant Betmar community. She cherished the willingness of residents to embrace new ideas and activities, leading summer adventures like tea house tours across Florida.

Michelle’s sense of community extended to starting volunteer shout-outs at coffee hour, recognizing those who donated their time and effort to make Betmar a better place. Creative costumes, dance routines, and endless enthusiasm made living in Betmar unforgettable for many. Her infectious joy and optimism touched everyone, as she always aimed to share the joy she felt blessed with.

“I am blessed with joy,” stated McKinnon. “And I wanted to share that joy.” Now, with Mac as president, Michelle looks forward to supporting him, enjoying golf, mahjong, and shuffleboard, and exploring possibilities like reviving a fitness center for Betmar. Though she misses her role and the community connection, she remains committed to making life fun and optimistic, believing that even small gestures can have a big impact.

Through her journey, Michelle has proven that joy, creativity, and a willingness to connect with others create a truly blessed life. She will be truly missed in this role!♥
