Honoring Vietnam Veterans: DAR and Zephyrhills American LegionCeremony

A Commemorative Event Marking the End of a Presidential Proclamation

By Susan Slater

Zephyrhills American Legion hosted a ceremony where the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) paid tribute to Vietnam Veterans. This event not only honored the service and sacrifice of these veterans but also marked the conclusion of a 13-year presidential proclamation signed by President Barack Obama in 2012.

The proclamation launched a 13-year commemoration period for those who served in the Vietnam War from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, which concludes this year on Veterans Day. The proclamation sought to honor the valor, sacrifice, and dedication of those who served in the Vietnam War, addressing the long-overdue recognition for many veterans who returned to a divided nation andhostility.

This presidential initiative was to ensure that no veteran is forgotten. The DAR, with its longstanding commitment to patriotism and service, answered this call, organizing ceremonies throughout the proclamation period.

The DAR was founded in 1890 with a mission to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Over the decades, DAR has played a vital role in supporting veterans. Their dedication to honoring those who serve in the armed forces is a core part of their identity and mission.

The ceremony began with an introduction by Commander Curt Shuey. Attendees joined in the Pledge of Allegianceand an invocation was delivered by Legion chaplain, John Murch.

Regent Marie Wunderlich opened by expressing what a perfect day this was. The sun was shining, and this was a historic service in a historic building.

“Everyone has a personal stake in this war,” said Wunderlich. “These soldiers cannot unsee thedepths of their experiences. We want them to understand, we know.”

The missing man table was a significant part of the ceremony. Since 2023 families have been submitting their DNA. As a result, 123 soldiers have been located and brought home: 88 - WWII, 35 - Korean War and 4 -Vietnam War. “No One is Left Behind.”

Kathy McGee shared a letter to Vietnam soldiers stating how they are appreciated then and now. The ‘Service in Silence’ phrase reflects the painful experience of many Vietnam veterans who returned home to public indifference and suppressed their war experiences for decades.

A special presentation honored the widows of deceased veterans. They were presented commemorative pins and small flags, honoring their sacrifices and the losses they endured, underscoring the theme that the legacy of the Vietnam War extends beyond those who served on the battlefield.

Ann Swinford read ‘Names on the Wall’ and shared her personal experiences with her veteran husband. “He volunteered to go. He had an excitement to fight,” said Swinford.  “But no training prepares you for the horrors of war and the scars only visible to families.”

Kathy Schneider explained every symbol on the Commemorative Vietnam War Flag. Shortly following, every Vietnam Veteran came forward to be pinned for their service, valor and sacrifice. The pin, featuring the phrase “A Grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You,” symbolizes the nation’s belated recognition and appreciation for their sacrifices. After each veteran was pinned, Regent Marie Wunderlich went on to say,  “We have brought this flag with us on the road,at every ceremony. This is our last,” she said. “We have folded it and cared for it.”

And with that said, presented it to Commander Curt Shuey, a very touching moment. This concluded the services, and all were welcome to stay for light snacks and beverages.
