Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue Supports First Responders

Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue Supports First Responders

A History of Community Service and Dedication in Zephyrhills

By Susan Slater

The City of Zephyrhills has seen significant changes over the past five years, yet one constant remains: the commitment of the Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Serving in a supportive role, this non-profit continues to play an essential part with first responders and local community.

Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue was formed during the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, firefighters were entirely composed of volunteers. The organization began by raising its own funds. Donors were from mobile home communities, fraternal organizations, and attendees at city events. This enabled them to purchase specialized equipment, such as improved radio communications, extraction tools, and medical supplies. At one point, radio communications relied on CB systems.

Initially, volunteers were primarily responsible for stabilizing victims before hospital transport. The City of Zephyrhills owned some equipment and their building. As time progressed, the organization acquired more advanced gear, enhancing their ability to respond to emergencies.

The funeral homes in town played an important role, providing ambulances for victims’ transport. This private service, coordinated by funeral home directors, eventually transitioned as the funeral homes donated ambulances to the organization. The county’s involvement in fire rescue and ambulance operations brought additional support, including walkie-talkies and the development of operational budgets for equipment and supplies after employing a chief and three firefighters.

With advances in technology, the organization adopted cell phones, allowing EMTs to initiate IVs under physician direction. Further fundraising led to the acquisition of a fire truck from the City of Tampaand a 1927 American LaFrance antique truck. The antique truck was restored with community donations including support from the Moose Lodge to paint it. It is now a centerpiece at parades and funerals.

Today, the Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue support sixcountystations across Zephyrhills and Dade City. Although the City of Zephyrhills eventually transferred fire services to Pasco County, the volunteers remain responsible for the supplies inside their truck—water, coffee, Gatorade, snacks, and breakfast bars—ensuring first responders have the sustenance they need during emergencies. All these provisions are funded solely through community donations.

President Bob Winterscontinues to lead the organization with dedication. Their enduring presence is a testament to the power of community, service, and generosity. The story of Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue is one of adaptation, resilience, and unwavering community spirit. These volunteers embody a tradition of service that continues to make a difference in Zephyrhills and beyond.

The Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue work closely with Pasco County Fire and Rescue. Today, all fire trucks and emergency vehicles are officially managed and maintained by the county.

Volunteers are a familiar sight at local events, where they actively connect with residents and children. They distribute plastic fire hats, coloring books, and stickers to educate young people about fire safety. These activities help nurture positive relationships with families and instill important safety habits in children, while also raising awareness about the organization’s ongoing work. The need for new volunteers is constant. Fresh faces bring new energy and ideas, helping sustain the organization’s mission.

Fundraising remains the lifeblood of Zephyrhills Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Without regular donations from the community, the organization could not continue its vital support for first responders or maintain the supplies needed during emergencies. The risk of closure is real, making every fundraising drive and donation critical for survival. Community support ensures that volunteers can keep making a difference, even as operational costs rise. Continued financial support is essential to preserve this heritage for future generations.
