Historic Post celebrates birthday with a facelift, not cake. This isn’t just an old American Legion Hall. The Gordon M. Crothers Memorial Preservation Project tells a story that transcends brick and mortar, inviting readers to see a century-old building as a living testament to a community’s memory and values.
A century in the making, Gordon M. Crothers American Legion Post 15 will celebrate 100 years in its historic home at 37745 Church Ave. in Dade City, Florida, next year. The hall’s story begins with a community-wide effort to honor Pasco County’s World War I service members and evolves into a purpose-built home for the local American Legion Post. The post adjusted its name to honor Corporal Gordon M. Crothers, a son of Michigan snowbirds who attended school in Dade City from 1910 to 1912, and who enlisted to fight in World War I in 1917 and was killed in action in France on August 2, 1918.
A hall born of collective memory. The hall itself was built in 1927 with $10,000 raised by post members and the broader community. The post was formed on June 7, 1919, with the charter issued February 19, 1920, and the building’s dedication followed the American Legion ritual on January 9, 1928. Armistice Day ceremonies culminated on the site where the cornerstone would later be laid, drawing hundreds of residents to witness a milestone in the community’s honoring of its veterans. In its early years, the structure stood as a hub for remembrance, distributed along the same grounds where founders and veterans gathered to shape the civic life of Dade City.
Today, the building remains one of the few surviving places in Pasco County where visitors can stand in the spots where veterans and founders gathered and where the community chose to honor sacrifices, and it stands as a living monument and call to ongoing stewardship—an anchor for Dade City’s civic life built and maintained by local veterans and citizens who understand that honoring service requires ongoing effort, family support, and resilience.
As the building confronts critical preservation needs today, the project frames the work not simply as roof repair or restoration of an old facility, but as stewardship of a living monument. It preserves a place where stories and sacrifices are remembered, where families find support, and where generations of residents have gathered to affirm their commitment to those who served the nation.
A shift in purpose for today’s needs, instead of a traditional birthday celebration, the post is prioritizing repairs and restoration on the century-old hall. The community’s focus is on essential improvements—most notably a new roof and flooring repairs—that will ensure the building can continue to serve future generations. “We’re trying to get a new roof,” said Jennifer McGregor, an auxiliary member and public relations chairwoman. “We’re actively trying to preserve the building, so we need some much-needed roof repairs as well as flooring repairs. We would like to have a birthday party; however, rather than spending money on a birthday party, we’d much rather put that money towards a new roof, a new subfloor, and other things.”
Their efforts to raise funds have been challenging to say the least. The Legion holds events from bingo to karaoke to dinners and dances, with a planned craft fair in October. The space is also available for rent, with plenty of parking and conveniently located. Preserving this hall is more than safeguarding its physical shell—it’s a public commitment made nearly a century ago to remember and honor those who served.
